And so we began the long journey north, some taking a bit longer than normal (Andy got lost round a diversion in Marlborough). Upon arriving in what could only be described as a male friendly area of Blackpool we checked into our hotel. The more senior members of the tour choose to take refuge in the nearest watering hole while the younger members (including Angelo) made there way to the Pleasure beach. The sight of the 'Big One' soon had 2 members of the party who shall remain nameless, Pete and Angelo, finding their excuses not to go on it. The evening consisted of a curry and a few beverages before the drivers made their excuses and went to bed. On what we were told was a lovely Lancashire summers day (Light drizzle) we made our way back down the motorway to play our first match against Fromley CC in Liverpool. On arrival we were greeted by bacon sandwiches which was welcomed by all the troops. After a short delay for rain Skipper for the day Angelo won the toss and elected to bat. After a steady start Dinton found themselves 2 down before a partnership of 126 from Dan Scyklemore (on debut) and Andy O'Neill put Dinton in a good position. Late hitting from Angelo boosted the score to a competitive total. Fromley reached the target with a few overs to spare and the only real danger came when Chris Stennings came into the attack deceiving the batsman with his first ball. Chris later described this as the doosara which he has been working hard on to perfect. The evenings entertainment was provided by Chris again, fresh from his bowling spell, where the whole of Walkabouts was treated to a dance off between himself and a Blackpoolian in what resembled a pair of matadors in a bull ring! I'm reliably informed that exclusive footage is now available via 'Youtube' and Chris will be releasing a DVD just in time for Christmas. From the start of the week Wednesday was always going to be a write off weather wise and so it proved as the wind and rain continued its attack on Blackpool. Nursing some fairly hefty hangovers the day was spent mainly looking around the shops and the many arcades on the seafront. The evening began with what shall be called the 'Chairman's Dinner' at an Italian with entertainment provided by one of Franks famous after dinner speeches. This then proceeded into one of the local bars where the rest of the touring party were and then on into the early hours. Thursday started with a few absentees from breakfast, namely Matt and Andy who didn't wake up until 12:30pm. The majority of the touring party played crazy golf during the morning with Angelo 'Ricky/Sheila/Bruce' Zuiss taking the coverted Blackpool Open Title 2009. Pete, Dan and Shaun spent the morning in their speedos at the waterpark, male bonding apparently.............enough said. During the afternoon a spot of beach cricket was played (well we say beach cricket but due to the tide coming in beach patrol wouldn't let us on the beach) so we settled for the promenade. This game was then spoiled by Andy hitting the ball onto the beach (he blames Ben for some slack fielding). We made the trip to nearby Preston for our final game, a 20/20 match versus the backroom staff of Preston Football Club. Skipper for the day Pete upon winning the toss chose to bat first until the home skipper then decided his team would rather bat first so preceded in padding up! Some good bowling resulted in the home side reaching 120 off their 20 overs but Dinton felt comfortable chasing this down. Some good batting by Ben, Angelo and Pete saw Dinton close and it was left to number 11 Andy to hit 2 off 2 balls. After blocking the first he was then bowled by the last ball resulting in scenes of joy from both teams! Andy blames the poor light for his dismissal...... Thursday night was spent visiting various bars and nightclubs with Ben, Matt, Andy and 'shakey legs Sycklemore' heading to the biggest nightclub in all of England. After escaping the cluches of a Blackpool drug dealer they returned in the early hours. And so Friday was upon us and after a hearty breakfast (ok small breakfast..) the team gathered in the lobby for Bens rather nervous Wally speech. There were really only ever 2 contenders and Andy romped home (mainly due to his second ball duck, navigation skills and animal rescue with Matt) leaving Dan to think what could of been. Andy therefore has two new items of clothing, a duck shirt and wally cap, which he will now be proudly wearing most Saturday nights in the Chapel Nightclub. |
